Call for Artists – Utility Boxes

SUBMIT DESIGNS BEFORE DEC. 15 2021



Here is your chance to show your artistic talent & get your design installed as part of IB’s public art, plus you can win a cash prize!  Announcing the “Artist Call” for two categories of utility box decoration, made possible by a generous grant from SDG&E!  Design themes are open to several design themes, such as Wildlife, Pets, Sports, School, Floral, Surfing, Shorebirds, Abstract, etc.

Please contact IB Arts Bureau at ibartsbureau2@gmail.com for more information, & note that no text or controversial subjects or images will be permitted in any winning designs.

“Category One” is for four $100 awards for the best designs by ages 17 & under.  These designs must be submitted via email to the Imperial Beach Arts Bureau at ibartsbureau2@gmail.com no later than December 15, 2021.  Category One Winners will be announced by February 2022.  The winning 17 & under designs will be installed by IB Arts Bureau members on select utility boxes in Imperial Beach before May 2022.

“Category Two” is for five awards for up to $450 each for design & installation of utility box decoration by ages 18 & over.  These designs must be submitted via email to the Imperial Beach Arts Bureau at ibartsbureau2@gmail.com no later than December 15, 2021.  Category Two Winners will be announced by February 2022.  The winning 18 & over designs must be installed by the winning artists on specified utility boxes in Imperial Beach before May 2022.  Additional program rules & requirements will be shared with the winning artists.

Imperial Beach Utility Box Project Completed


Sponsored by San Diego Gas and Electric Company, two utility boxes at the Imperial Beach Library in Imperial Beach, California has been beautified by artwork. The theme was books, marine life, and children.  Artists working on the project were Phil Iddings, Dave Frink, and Sherry Hansen of the Imperial Beach Arts Bureau. 

Boxes are located on 8th and Imperial Beach Blvd.
